Overview

Walk the cobbled, brightly painted streets of the Bo-Kaap, the historic home of Cape Town's Cape Malay community at the foot of Signal Hill. Your local guide takes you past the neighbourhood's pink, yellow, and turquoise houses while sharing the story of the freed slaves who first painted them as an expression of freedom.

Along the way you'll learn about Cape Malay history, Islamic heritage, and the community's traditional cuisine — with the option to stop at a local cafe for a taste of Cape Malay cooking. See Rules & Requirements below before you book.

Rules & Requirements

Bo-Kaap is a living neighbourhood, not a museum — please ask before photographing residents or the insides of homes, and be mindful of noise on residential streets.
The tour covers steep, cobbled streets. Flat, closed-toe walking shoes are strongly recommended.
Groups are kept small (max 12) so everyone can hear the guide comfortably on narrow pavements.
This tour runs rain or shine. In wet weather, bring a light rain jacket — the cobbles can be slippery.

What to Bring

  • img Comfortable, flat walking shoes
  • img Sunblock and a hat
  • img Water bottle
  • img Cash for optional food stops
Not Included
  • Food and drinks (available to purchase locally)
  • Hotel pickup and drop-off
